ABOUT COSTA ALEGRE

COSTA ALEGRE has been a closely guarded secret since the the Spaniards first plied this coast. It has been a refuge for the pirates and now for the land barons.
The area was first opened up in the 60’s when the government formed the Ejidos . The first major transformation was when Highway 200 was constructed, the first road built in the area.
Costa Alegre lies approximately from the Rio San Nicholas in the north, down to Barra de Navidad. The  This being the case there are few public beaches here. There are 3 beaches with public access Chalacatepec Point  (small area), Chamela, and La Manzanilla. You can get to a few beaches in the ejidos like Arroyo Seco.

Beachfront property  is very limited and their prices are know getting ready to skyrocket. A few owners hold private titles to their property, like Puerta del Cielo on Chalacatepec beach. Most of the land is owned by a few large land holders and ejidatarios .

There is an international airport soon to be opened , just 10 minutes north of Chalacatepec. This along with the completion of

modernizing the coastal Highway 200 will open up Chalacatepec and the rest of  Costa Alegre to their destiny.

The “Elite” resorts as they are being touted are soon to start construction on their properties. Tamarindo where the 4 seasons is going in has trucks running from sunrise to sunset. Up the coast a little you have Cuitzmala, a small private resort nestled into a large parcela. Nearby is another high end resort known as Careyes. Villas here can be had for 15k US per night. A bit north of Careyes lies the Zafiro Resort on Chamela bay. It consists of 900 hectares. The main property anchoring this resort will be the Hotel Cheval Blanc. This is being put out as the most opulent on the Pacific…. Up the coast from Chamela is Ms. Goldsmiths elegant Las Alamandas Resort. Holding down the northern border is the BK Partner’s 1.3 billion dollar Rasaland Resort on the pristine Chalacatepec beach. The one and Only Resort will be moving in with its Santa Maria de Xala occupying 1200 hectares with 8 km of coastline. It is being advertised as a Hacienda By The Sea. The international airport will be about a 15 min drive.

The Costa Alegre has tropical vegetation year-round. During this period a gradual transition begins as the local plants begin to dry up from the seasonal rains, slowly reverting from tropical “jungle” to a semi tropical “desert”, complete with many varieties of giant cactus.

Rainy Season June through September

  • Temperatures range from 82-89 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Humidity is high
  • Ocean temperatures range from 82-86 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Rain is common but not expected daily. Afternoon rains of 2-3 hours are common every few days.

With the first rain of the season, the Costa Alegre explodes overnight into a tropical green paradise. The surrounding area comes alive. The foliage grows at a rapid rate, and within days the transformation to “jungle” is complete, with exotic flora of all shapes, sizes and colors.

Regardless of the season, Costa Alegre’s climate assures plenty of warm rays and summery temperatures year-round. Enjoy one of the few places in the world where you can experience arid desert and vibrant jungle at different times of the year.
